524173.14

John Deere 524173.14 – PTR (Power Train Reverser): Main Control Module Has Noted An Issue With The Signals From The Clutch Pedal Position Sensor

Issue description

Sync Lever Shift Without Clutch Pedal Engaged. The system has detected that the operator shifted the sync lever, but the clutch pedal position sensor did not register the pedal being depressed. This points to either a malfunction in the clutch pedal position sensor circuit or an operator error.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the clutch pedal position sensor (potentiometer) for physical damage, misalignment, or a disconnected linkage/ball stud.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the clutch pedal position sensor. Ensure all connections are tight and free from corrosion, moisture, chafing, or short circuits.

  3. Use a multimeter to test the sensor circuitry for proper voltage and continuity. Ensure there are no open or short circuits causing the signal to drop out.

  4. Check the PTR control unit for any other active diagnostic trouble codes (such as 524173.15, .16, or .17) which indicate specific high/low voltage failures on the same circuit.

  5. Ensure the PTR control unit software is up-to-date with the latest manufacturer patches.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the battery negative (—) cable to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Access the Sensor

Remove the center control console cover to access the clutch pedal assembly.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

Disconnect the wire connector (A) from the clutch pedal position sensor.

  4. Detach Linkage

Remove the ball stud (B) connecting the sensor linkage to the clutch pedal.

  5. Remove Sensor

Remove the two mounting screws (C) and pull out the old clutch pedal position sensor (D).

  6. Install New Sensor

Mount the new sensor using the two screws, reattach the ball stud to the pedal, and plug in the wire connector.

  7. Reassembly

Reinstall the center control console cover and reconnect the battery negative cable.

  8. Calibration

Depending on the exact tractor model, you may need to perform a clutch pedal calibration procedure via the tractor's diagnostic monitor or John Deere Service ADVISOR software so the PTR module learns the new sensor's sweep parameters.

Parts you might need
