John Deere 524173.15 – PTR: Clutch Pedal Sensor Out Of Range High
Issue description
The control unit has detected that the clutch pedal position sensor's Circuit A voltage is above 4.7 V, or Circuit B voltage is above 2.35 V, for at least 0.5 seconds. This indicates a short to power, a failed sensor potentiometer/Hall effect mechanism, or a wiring harness issue.

Check the cause
Inspect the clutch pedal linkage and the sensor's physical mounting to ensure the pedal returns fully and the flatted shaft is not stripped or physically damaged.
Disconnect the 6-pin electrical connector at the clutch pedal position sensor and check for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out pins.
Turn the key ON and verify that the sensor is receiving a steady 5V reference supply and has a good ground.
Perform a signal sweep test by monitoring Circuit A and Circuit B voltages while slowly depressing and releasing the clutch pedal, looking for erratic jumps or a constant high voltage (above 4.7V on A or 2.35V on B) which confirms an internal short.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the clutch pedal position sensor, which is mounted directly to the pivot point of the clutch pedal assembly in the cab.
Removal
Disconnect the 6-pin wiring harness connector from the sensor. Remove the two mounting screws (typically 4.5mm mounting holes) securing the sensor to the bracket. Slide the sensor off the flatted shaft.
Installation
Slide the new sensor onto the flatted shaft, ensuring proper alignment. Install and tighten the mounting screws. Reconnect the 6-pin electrical connector.
Reassembly
Reconnect the negative battery cable.
Calibration
The PTR control unit must learn the new sensor's minimum and maximum voltage values. Perform the clutch pedal calibration routine using the tractor's diagnostic interface (or the specific dashboard sequence for your model) before the tractor will operate correctly.
