John Deere 524175.03 – Rear Chassis Module (PLC): High Voltage On The Wheel Speed Sensor

The system has detected an abnormally high voltage signal coming from the wheel speed sensor circuit. This typically indicates a short to power in the sensor's wiring harness, a failed sensor internally shorting, or a fault at the module connector. A failed wheel speed sensor causes a loss of wheel speed data to the ECU, which can disable traction-dependent systems, cause improper transmission shifting, or result in inaccurate ground speed readings.

   Visually inspect the wheel speed sensor wiring harness routing along the chassis to the Rear Chassis Module (PLC) for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation that could cause a short to a power source.

   Disconnect the wheel speed sensor and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture intrusion, or bent terminals. Do the same at the PLC module connector.

   With the key ON (engine off), use a multimeter to check the voltage at the sensor connector. Compare the readings against the OEM service manual specifications to confirm if the high voltage is originating from the module/wiring or if the sensor itself has failed internally.

   Test the signal wire for a short to battery voltage.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the faulty wheel speed sensor, which monitors the rotational speed of the wheel hub or axle.

   Disconnect

   Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.

   Remove

   Remove the retaining bolt holding the sensor in place. Carefully pull the sensor straight out of its mounting bore. (If it is stuck due to debris or rust, use penetrating oil and gently twist it—do not break it off inside the housing).

   Clean

   Wipe the mounting surface and bore clean to ensure the new sensor seats at the correct depth.

   Install

   Insert the new wheel speed sensor and install the retaining bolt.

   Reconnect

   Plug the wiring harness back into the sensor, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery. Use a John Deere Service ADVISOR tool (or compatible scanner) to clear the 524175.03 fault code from the Rear Chassis Module (PLC).

   Test

   Test drive the tractor to verify that traction control, transmission shifting, and speedometer readings are functioning normally and that the code does not return.
