John Deere 524175.04 – Rear Chassis Module (PLC): Low Voltage On The Wheel Speed Sensor

The controller is detecting a voltage signal from the wheel speed sensor circuit that has dropped below the minimum expected threshold. This condition typically points to an open circuit, a short to ground in the wiring harness, a disconnected plug, or an internal failure of the sensor itself. When this fails, the tractor loses wheel speed data, which can cause traction control to malfunction, ground speed readings to become inaccurate, and IVT/CVT transmissions to shift improperly.

   Inspect the wheel speed sensor and its 3-wire connector on the rear axle/hub for physical damage, heavy debris, or corrosion

   Trace the wiring from the sensor back to the Rear Chassis Module (PLC) and look for chafed wires, pinched lines, or a short to ground

   Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to verify that the PLC is sending the correct reference voltage to the sensor connector

   Test the sensor internally for an open circuit using a resistance/continuity test

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes while working on the PLC circuits.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the faulty wheel speed sensor on the rear axle or wheel hub.

   Disconnect the Harness

   Unplug the 3-wire electrical connector from the sensor.

   Remove the Sensor

   Remove the retaining hardware (usually a single bolt) and carefully pull the sensor out of its mounting bore.

   Clean the Area

   Wipe the mounting surface clean, ensuring no dirt or debris falls into the hub.

   Install the New Sensor

   Insert the replacement wheel speed sensor. (Note: Ensure you have the correct length sensor for your specific axle, as John Deere uses both 36mm and 65mm variants).

   Secure and Reconnect

   Tighten the retaining bolt and plug the 3-wire connector back in.

   Test

   Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and clear the fault codes. Perform a test drive to verify that the speedometer registers correctly and the transmission shifts smoothly.
