John Deere 524183.19 – Transmission Module IVT (PTA) or TCU: Missing Info On The CAN BUS, Transmission Module IVT (PTA)

The Cab Module (TIA - Tractor Implement Automation) or the User Interface Controller (UIC) is unable to determine the value for the Change of Direction of Travel. Because the cab module cannot read this value, it fails to provide the CAN BUS with the relevant directional data, transmitting a replacement/default value instead.

   Inspect the Left-Hand Reverser / Direction of Travel lever on the steering column for physical damage, sticking, or loose connections.

   Check if there are other active codes related to the TIA/UIC modules or general CAN BUS communication failures. If multiple modules are missing data, the issue is likely the CAN BUS backbone rather than the reverser switch.

   Inspect the wiring harness connectors at the reverser switch and at the TIA/UIC cab module. Look for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture ingress.

   Verify the CAN BUS communication lines between the Cab Module (TIA/UIC) and the Transmission Module (PTA/TCU) using a multimeter or oscilloscope to ensure messages are passing through.

   Secure the Machine

   Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and ensure the park lock is engaged.

   Access the Switch

   Remove the steering column shrouds or dash panels to access the base of the Direction of Travel / Left-Hand Reverser switch.

   Electrical Testing

   Disconnect the reverser switch harness. Using a multimeter, test the switch's electrical continuity across its Forward, Neutral, and Reverse positions according to the OEM service manual specifications.

   Replace the Switch (If Faulty)

   If the switch fails to register the correct resistance/continuity for the direction of travel, remove the mounting hardware, install a new reverser switch, and reconnect the harness.

   Harness Repair (If Switch is Good)

   If the switch tests perfectly, trace the wiring harness from the switch to the TIA/UIC cab module, and from the cab module to the PTA/TCU transmission module. Repair any open circuits, shorts to ground, or damaged CAN wires.

   Clear and Calibrate

   Reassemble the dash panels. Connect a John Deere Service ADVISOR (or equivalent diagnostic tool) to clear the stored 524183.19 code. Test drive the tractor to verify that the transmission shifts directions properly and the code does not return.
