John Deere 524191.06 – CCU (Chassis Control Unit): Amp Draw At the Air Brake Solenoid Is High

The control module has detected an electrical current (amperage) on the air brake solenoid circuit that exceeds the normal operating threshold, typically pointing to a short circuit in the wiring or an internally shorted solenoid coil.

   Power cycle the tractor to determine if the code is an intermittent glitch.

   Visually inspect the wiring harness from the CCU to the air trailer brake solenoid for rubbed-through insulation, pinched wires, or shorts to chassis ground.

   Disconnect the plug at the air brake solenoid and CCU to check for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins.

   Use a multimeter to measure the resistance (Ohms) across the pins of the air brake solenoid coil; a reading of zero or near-zero indicates an internal short.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to ensure safety while working on the electrical system.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to ground in the wiring harness, repair the damaged section of the wire using proper weather-sealed connectors, or replace the affected harness section.

   Replace the Solenoid

   If the wiring is intact but the solenoid coil failed the resistance test, the solenoid valve must be replaced. Relieve any residual air pressure from the trailer brake system, disconnect the electrical connector, unbolt the solenoid valve block/actuator and remove it. Install the new solenoid valve, ensuring any O-rings or seals are properly seated, and reconnect the electrical harness.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Reconnect the battery, turn on the tractor, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 524191.06 fault code. Engage the trailer brakes to verify proper operation and ensure the code does not return.
