John Deere 524193.31 – UIC: Transmission Oil Temperature Too Low
Issue description
When the transmission fluid is below the minimum safe operating temperature, the system limits or completely locks transmission functionality to prevent mechanical damage. The tractor requires an automatic warm-up routine to complete before full operation is allowed.

Check the cause
Engage Park Lock to allow the automatic warm-up routine to start (can take up to 156 seconds depending on ambient temperature)
Verify the transmission is filled with standard John Deere HY-GARD or BIO-HY-GARD II (avoid Low Viscosity HY-GARD)
Check the rear ISOBUS plug and connections between the tractor and implement for dirt or loose pins
Monitor live transmission oil temperature data on the cab display for implausibly low readings (e.g., -40°C) indicating a failed sensor or wiring
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and relieve any hydraulic pressure.
Inspect Wiring
Locate the transmission oil temperature sensor on the transmission valve block/housing. Disconnect the electrical harness and inspect the connector for corrosion, moisture, or chafing. Repair the harness if damaged.
Remove the Sensor
Place a clean catch pan under the sensor area to catch any hydraulic fluid. Unthread the faulty temperature probe from the transmission housing.
Install the New Sensor
Thread the new OEM temperature sensor into the port. Tighten to the specified torque in your model's service manual to avoid cracking the housing.
Reconnect and Top Off
Reconnect the electrical harness. Check the transmission fluid level via the sight glass or dipstick and top off any HY-GARD fluid lost during the swap.
Test
Start the tractor, shift into Park to allow the system to register the new temperature reading, and verify that the 524193.31 code moves to 'Stored' or clears entirely.
