John Deere 524212.19 – HCC: CAN BUS Message Error Between Modules For Hitch Depth Control

Issue description

Triggered when the Rear Hitch Lever Position data is received with a failure indication. This points to an incorrect CAN Bus message or missing information from the depth control regulator of the rear hitch, indicating a fault in the control lever itself, its circuit, or an interruption in CAN bus communication.

Check the cause

  1. Restart the Tractor: Turn off the engine and restart the vehicle to see if resetting the communication messages corrects the code.

  2. Inspect Power Supply: Visually inspect around the batteries and alternator for any signs of damage, loose connections, or accumulated debris that could cause voltage drops to the modules.

  3. Check Fuses: Inspect the fuses related to the Hitch Control Unit and Instrument Control Unit, specifically Fuse F30 (and F9 depending on model) for the HCU/ICU communication circuits.

  4. Wiring Inspection: Check for any physical interruptions, corrosion, or pin damage in the CAN bus communication wiring harness connecting the rear hitch control lever to the HCC/HCU.

Repair steps

  1. Acknowledge and clear code

Acknowledge and clear the code on the CommandCenter display (if applicable) and restart the tractor.

  2. Access control lever

If the active Service Code reappears, power down the machine and access the rear hitch control lever assembly.

  3. Test wiring and voltage

Disconnect the wiring harness to the rear hitch control lever. Use a multimeter to verify that the sensor is receiving proper supply voltage and that the CAN bus lines have continuity to the HCC module.

  4. Diagnose internal failure

If the wiring and fuses are intact but the lever position data is still failing, the control lever/depth control regulator itself has failed internally.

  5. Replace component

Replace the faulty rear hitch control lever component.

  6. Verify repair

Reconnect the harness, power on the tractor, and verify that the 524212.19 code has cleared and that the rear hitch responds properly to lever inputs. (Note: If the issue persists after lever replacement, John Deere advises having a dealer perform advanced CAN bus diagnostics).
