Issue description

The park position signal cannot be determined or an incorrect CAN bus message is provided to the network by the transmission control software. This triggers a replacement value to be transmitted, generating the diagnostic trouble code. When this error is active, the functionality of the rear PTO is often significantly limited or entirely non-functional.

Check the cause

  1. Check for Priority Codes: Check if there are active diagnostic trouble codes in the PTA, PTQ, or PTD (transmission) control software. If transmission codes are present, they take priority and must be diagnosed first.

  2. Inspect the Park Position Sensor: Test the park position sensor for proper operation, as a failure here often interrupts the signal expected by the CAN bus.

  3. Verify CAN Bus Communication: Use a John Deere diagnostic tool (like Service ADVISOR) to test the CAN bus communication for irregularities. Ensure that all CAN messages from the transmission control software are being correctly transmitted and received by the RPT control software.

  4. Inspect Wiring and Connections: Check the wiring and connections associated with the park position sensor and the CAN bus lines between the Cab Module, Transmission Module, and RPT for signs of damage, corrosion, or loose pins.

Repair steps

  1. Resolve Priority Faults

    Clear any underlying transmission (PTA/PTQ/PTD) codes first. If the transmission controller doesn't know the park state, the RPT will continue to throw 524218.09.

  2. Harness Repair

    If diagnostic checks reveal high resistance, corrosion, or an open circuit on the CAN bus lines or park position sensor harness, clean the connectors with contact cleaner or splice/replace the damaged wiring.

  3. Sensor Replacement
