John Deere 524218.31 – PTA / TCU: Powered Zero Transmission Request From Lever For Too Long / Power Zero, Malfunction
Issue description
This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is generated when the transmission control software receives a "Power Zero" signal via the CAN BUS for an extended period (more than 5 minutes). This occurs if the lever is left in this position for over 5 minutes, or if a switch/wiring failure causes the system to think it has been in this position for over 5 minutes.

Check the cause
Verify operator habits to ensure the reverser lever is not being left in the Power Zero position for extended stops (over 5 minutes).
Use a diagnostic tool (like Service ADVISOR) to monitor the live data for the Forward/Reverse lever and check if the 'Power Zero' switch state remains active when moved.
Inspect the physical Forward/Reverse lever assembly for sticking, debris, or mechanical binding.
Inspect the wiring harness connecting the reverser lever to the UIC/TIA module for chafed wires causing a short to power or ground, and verify CAN bus communication.
Repair steps
Clear and Retest
Clear the fault code. Operate the tractor and ensure the reverser lever is not held in the Power Zero position for more than 5 minutes. If the code does not return, the issue was operator error.
Isolate the Switch
If the code returns immediately or the diagnostic tool shows the Power Zero switch is stuck "On", disconnect the electrical connector at the base of the Forward/Reverse lever.
Evaluate the Circuit
If disconnecting the lever causes the switch state in the diagnostic tool to change to "Off", the internal switch of the reverser lever has failed. The lever assembly must be replaced.
Replace the Lever
Remove the steering column shrouds/trim to access the reverser lever mounting hardware. Unbolt the faulty lever, install the new assembly, and route the wiring harness securely to prevent pinching.
Harness Repair (If Applicable)
If the switch state remained "On" even with the lever disconnected, trace the wiring harness back to the UIC/TIA module to locate and repair the short circuit.
Software Update
Ensure that the PTA, TIA, and UIC control software are updated to the latest versions to prevent erroneous CAN bus timeouts.
