John Deere 524219.04 – ATC: Low Voltage From The Screen Defog Sensor (Sensor Mounted On Windscreen) / B143 Defog Sensor, Voltage Too Low
Issue description
The control unit registers a frequency or voltage at the signal input of the windshield defog sensor (designated as component B143, lead 2003) that is too low. This indicates that the sensor's circuit is shorted to ground.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Examine the wiring and connections for the B143 defog sensor (specifically lead 2003) at the windshield roof module. Look for pinched wires, chafing, corrosion, or obvious grounding issues.
Voltage/Multimeter Test: Use a multimeter to check the voltage at the sensor's signal input. Confirm if it falls below the normal 5-volt reference range, which verifies the short to ground.
Harness vs. Sensor Isolation: Disconnect the sensor. If the short to ground disappears on your multimeter (or via the diagnostic tool readings), the sensor is internally shorted. If the short remains, the wiring harness is grounded somewhere between the sensor connector and the ATC module.
Diagnostic Tool: Connect the John Deere Service Advisor (or a compatible OBD-II diagnostic tool) to monitor the live frequency/voltage of the sensor and confirm the ATC module's exact readings.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.
Locate and Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic checks pointed to a harness issue, trace lead 2003 back to the ATC module. Repair or splice any damaged wiring that is shorting to the chassis ground.
Replace the Sensor (If Applicable)
If the sensor itself is internally shorted, remove the defog sensor shield/cover from the windshield, unclip the faulty B143 sensor, and plug in the replacement.
Reassemble and Restore Power
Reinstall the sensor shield and reconnect the battery.
Clear Codes and Test
Use your diagnostic tool to clear the 524219.04 fault code. Start the tractor, engage the climate control system, and verify that the defogging system functions properly and the code does not return.
