John Deere 524224.02 – AIC, ACU, or CCU: Rear PTO Switch Signal Issue / Rear PTO Switch Circuit Conflict / PTO Switch Voltage Mismatch

This code is triggered when the rear Power Take-Off (PTO) switch fails to distinguish between the ON and OFF positions, registering the same voltage value for both states. It can also indicate a voltage mismatch between the direct input signal for the rear PTO ON switch and the CAN message from the armrest module. In response, the machine's control unit automatically disables the rear PTO to prevent inadvertent operation or damage.

   Cycle the PTO switch(es) OFF and then ON, and restart the engine to attempt a basic vehicle recovery

   Ensure the floor mat or any cab debris is not physically holding the switch down

   Inspect the rear PTO switch for physical damage, signs of wear, or mechanical binding that prevents it from toggling properly

   Use a multimeter to test the switch's functionality, checking for continuity and proper signal transmission in both the ON and OFF states

   Examine the wiring and connections associated with the rear PTO switch for loose, corroded, or damaged pins causing signal issues

   Check for any other active ACU/AIC codes that might be causing a voltage mismatch, and clear them before addressing 524224.02

   Use diagnostic tools to compare the direct input signal voltage against the CAN message voltage for the rear PTO ON switch

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to avoid electrical shorts during the repair.

   Access the Switch

   Locate the rear PTO switch on the armrest console or the right-hand fender surround (depending on cab configuration).

   Removal

   Carefully pry or unclip the switch bezel from the console. Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the back of the faulty switch.

   Clean Connections

   Inspect the harness connector. Clean the electrical connections thoroughly, as poor contact or dust/moisture buildup can cause intermittent voltage mismatches.

   Installation

   Plug the harness into the new replacement switch. Snap the new switch securely back into the mounting detent.

   Reassembly & Testing

   Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position, clear the stored fault codes, and conduct a comprehensive test to confirm the PTO engages and disengages appropriately without triggering the code.
