John Deere 524224.19 – RPT / OIC: Rear PTO Switch, Fault

The OIC (Operator Interface Control) software cannot determine the values of the external/rear PTO switch and therefore cannot provide the CAN bus with any data. To compensate, a transmitted replacement value is sent, which triggers this specific fault code in the RPT control software. When this error is active, the functionality of the rear PTO is significantly limited or entirely non-functional.

   Check the system for any other active Operator Interface Control (OIC) diagnostic trouble codes, as they take priority over RPT codes.

   Test the external rear PTO switch for proper physical operation and detent positioning.

   Inspect the wiring harness and pigtail connections associated with the rear PTO switch for signs of damage, corrosion, open circuits, or loose connections.

   Use a diagnostic tool to test the CAN bus (500 kBd) communication for irregularities, ensuring messages from the OIC are correctly transmitted and received by the RPT.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic inspection reveals damaged wires, shorts, or corroded connectors at the fender switch, repair or replace the affected wiring.

   Replace the Switch

   If the wiring is intact but the switch fails operational testing or is internally shorted/open, remove the defective fender-mounted switch and install a new one.

   Update Software

   Ensure that both the OIC and RPT control software are updated to the latest versions. Install any available OEM patches or updates that address CAN bus communication issues.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Clear the ECU codes and test the rear PTO engagement using both the cab switch and the external fender switch to ensure the PTO operates without derating or limiting functionality.
