John Deere 524224.31 – OIC / RPT / BCU / ACU: Issue With External PTO Switch / Rear PTO Switch, Malfunction

The control software detects an open circuit in the rear/external PTO switch circuit, the PTO was switched ON at the time the engine was started (safety lockout), or there is a transmission relay circuit problem. Rear PTO functionality is typically significantly limited or entirely disabled.

   Perform an operator reset by switching off the rear PTO switch completely and restarting the engine to rule out a safety lockout caused by starting the tractor with the PTO engaged.

   Visually inspect the external PTO switches located on the rear fenders for physical damage, moisture ingress, or mechanical wear.

   Check the wiring and connections associated with the rear PTO switch circuit for signs of an open circuit, corrosion, or loose connectors.

   Use diagnostic tools to verify CAN bus communication, ensuring that all CAN messages from the OIC control software are being correctly transmitted and received by the RPT control software.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and ensure the PTO is fully disengaged.

   Access the Switch

   Locate the external PTO switch on the rear fender. Carefully remove the switch housing or access panel to expose the wiring harness.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks revealed damaged wires, chafing against the fender, or corroded connector pins, repair or replace the affected wire sections and clean the contacts.

   Replace the Switch

   If the wiring is intact but the switch failed continuity testing (unable to reliably differentiate between ON/OFF states), disconnect the harness and remove the defective switch. Install the new switch and reconnect the harness.

   Software Update

   Ensure that both the OIC and RPT control software are updated to the latest versions, as John Deere occasionally releases patches that address circuit and communication sensitivity.

   Final Testing

   Clear the codes from the CommandCenter display. Start the tractor (ensuring the PTO switch is OFF during startup). Test the external PTO switch to confirm the PTO engages and disengages properly and that the code does not return.
