John Deere 524239.31 – PTD: Wheel Speed Sensor Fault
Issue description
The control software expects but does not receive wheel speed signals from both channel 1 and channel 2. This points to a problem in the circuit of the lead for the wheel speed signal between the control unit for range shifting and the control unit for gear shifting. When this error is detected, the control software may limit or disable transmission functions to protect the drivetrain.

Check the cause
Inspect both wheel speed sensors for any signs of physical damage, disconnection, or heavy debris buildup. Ensure that the sensors are properly aligned and securely mounted.
Inspect the wiring harness and connections leading to the wheel speed sensors for signs of damage, wear, chafing, or corrosion.
Ensure that both the control unit for range shifting and the control unit for gear shifting are communicating correctly. Check if the control unit software requires an update or reprogramming.
Repair steps
Prepare machine
Safely park the tractor, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake.
Locate sensors
Locate the wheel speed sensors on the transmission/drivetrain housing.
Inspect connectors
Disconnect the sensor connectors and inspect the pins for corrosion or pushed-out terminals. Clean the contacts if necessary.
Inspect and repair wiring
Trace the wiring harness between the wheel speed sensors, the range shifting control unit, and the gear shifting control unit. Repair or replace any damaged wires or connectors found.
Replace sensor(s)
If the wiring and connections are intact, remove and replace the faulty wheel speed sensor(s).
Install new sensor
Reconnect the wiring harness and ensure the new sensor is properly aligned and seated.
Update software
If necessary, use a diagnostic tool to reprogram or update the control unit software.
Clear codes and test
Clear the fault codes, test drive the tractor, and monitor the system to ensure the wheel speed sensors are providing accurate and consistent readings.
