John Deere 524252.04 – RPT: Rear PTO Solenoid Valve, Voltage Too Low
Issue description
The control software detects that the voltage in the positive lead of the rear PTO solenoid valve is too low, indicating a short circuit to ground in the circuit. When this error is detected, the functionality of the rear PTO is significantly limited or it will shut down entirely (often within seconds of activation).

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connections leading to the rear PTO solenoid valve for signs of physical damage, corrosion, pinched wires, or loose connections that could cause a short to ground.
Use a multimeter to measure the voltage levels at the positive lead of the rear PTO solenoid valve to ensure voltage is within the specified range when the PTO switch is activated.
Test the solenoid coil's resistance to see if it has internally shorted to ground.
Ensure that the RPT control software is updated to the latest version, as patches are sometimes released to address voltage regulation issues.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.
Access the Solenoid
Locate the Rear PTO Solenoid Valve on the rear PTO/transmission housing.
Harness Repair
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to ground in the wiring harness, repair the damaged wire or replace the affected connector.
Replace the Solenoid
If the wiring is intact but the solenoid itself is internally shorted, disconnect the electrical connector from the solenoid. Unbolt/unscrew the faulty solenoid valve from the housing.
Install New Part
Install the replacement Rear PTO Solenoid Valve and secure it. Reconnect the electrical harness.
Reassemble and Test
Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool (such as John Deere Service ADVISOR) to clear the RPT 524252.04 fault code. Start the tractor and engage the rear PTO to verify it runs continuously without shutting down.
