John Deere 524252.05 – CCU: Rear PTO Solenoid Circuit Fault / Rear PTO Solenoid Valve, Current Too Low

Issue description

The Chassis Control Unit (CCU) detects a malfunction in the rear PTO solenoid driver or circuit (such as an open circuit, short, or over-temperature condition) while the rear PTO is disengaged. Specifically, the control software detects that the current in the ground lead of the rear PTO solenoid valve is too low, indicating an open circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connections leading to the rear PTO solenoid valve for signs of an open circuit, chafed wires, or corroded connector pins.

  2. Use a multimeter or diagnostic tool to measure the current levels at the ground lead of the rear PTO solenoid valve (should be approx. 1100 mA when commanded on).

  3. Test the solenoid coil for proper resistance (ohms) to ensure it is not internally shorted or open.

  4. Ensure the CCU/RPT control software is updated to the latest version, as patches sometimes address current regulation false-flags.

Repair steps

  1. Clear Codes & Restart

    Restart the engine to verify if the active Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) reappears, as this code can sometimes be triggered by a communication glitch.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic checks reveal damaged wires or a loose ground lead, repair the wiring harness or replace the damaged connector.

  3. Replace the Solenoid

    If the wiring is intact but the solenoid fails the resistance/current test, the PTO solenoid valve must be replaced. Depending on the tractor model, this may require jacking the tractor, removing the left rear wheel, and removing the draft arm/lift link. Clean the area thoroughly, disconnect the wire harness, remove the retaining bolts, pull the old valve, and install the new valve with new O-rings, torqued to spec.

  4. Clear Codes

    Clear the CCU codes and test the Rear PTO engagement to ensure the fault does not return.
