John Deere 524259.15 – RLC, VLC, or CLC: Control Unit Temperature Above Normal

Issue description

The control module's internal temperature sensor has detected that its own circuit board temperature has exceeded a safe operating threshold (typically 85°C / 185°F or 100°C / 212°F) for more than 2 seconds.

Check the cause

  1. Cycle power by turning the key switch OFF, waiting a few moments, and turning it back ON to see if the code clears

  2. Reduce electrical load by turning off unnecessary high-draw lighting, wipers, or HVAC components, or increase engine RPM to attempt vehicle recovery

  3. Physically feel the module logging the code (RLC in the cab roof, VLC in the rear chassis, or CLC in the cab) to check its temperature

  4. If the module is physically hot (overworking cause): Check for an external short, high resistance in a wiring harness, or excessive current draw from a component like a failing wiper motor or shorted halogen work light

  5. If the module is NOT hot (internal failure cause): Suspect a failed internal temperature sensor on the circuit board

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the Circuit

    If the module is genuinely overheating, unplug the output connectors (e.g., roof lights for the RLC, rear implements for the VLC) one by one to identify which circuit is causing the excessive amp draw.

  2. Inspect Wiring

    Check the harnesses associated with the overloaded circuit for chafing, shorts to ground, or melted connectors. Repair as necessary.

  3. Replace the Module

    If the module is cool to the touch but the code is active and cannot be cleared, the module itself has suffered an internal hardware failure.

  4. Disconnect Batteries

    Always disconnect the negative battery terminal before removing a control module.

  5. Swap the Module

    Unplug the harness connectors from the faulty RLC, VLC, or CLC, unbolt the module from its mounting bracket, and install the replacement.

  6. Reprogramming

    A John Deere dealer must connect Service ADVISOR to flash the module with the correct software and End of Line (EOL) configuration data for your specific tractor.
