5246.13

John Deere 5246.13 – ECU: SCR Operator Derate Notification Active

Issue description

This is an informational fault code that notifies the operator that the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system derate timer is actively counting down. It indicates that an underlying issue with the emissions/DEF system has been detected, and if it is not resolved in a timely manner, the machine will enter a forced engine derate condition (limiting engine power and performance).

Check the cause

  1. Check for other active codes (e.g., 4364.17, 4364.18, 4360.07) in the ECU, as these will point to the actual mechanical or sensor failure triggering the countdown

  2. Verify that the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) tank is adequately filled

  3. Inspect DEF quality to ensure it is not diluted, low-quality, or contaminated

  4. Inspect the DEF system components (DEF pump, dosing unit, and tank header) for crystallization, clogged filters, or wiring harness damage

  5. Review the Operator Manual for specific timelines regarding your machine's SCR derate stages to know how much time remains before forced idle/shutdown

Repair steps

  1. Address the Root Cause

Based on the other active codes found during diagnostics, perform the necessary repair. This may involve draining and refilling the DEF tank with fresh fluid, replacing a clogged DEF pump filter, or replacing a failed DEF dosing pump/sensor.

  2. Run a System Cycle

Once the physical repair is made, allow the machine to run its SCR cycle. In some cases, the system will recognize the fix and clear the timer automatically.

  3. Reset the ECU

If the code does not clear on its own, you will need to connect a dealer-level diagnostic tool (such as John Deere Service ADVISOR or TEXA) to reset the ECU, clear the derate timer, and clear the notification.

  4. Monitor System

Run the equipment under load to monitor SCR performance and ensure the derate countdown does not reactivate.
