John Deere 5246.14 – ECU: SCR Operator Stage #4 Derate Notification / Engine Derate Countdown Active

Issue description

This is an informational fault code rather than a component failure code. It notifies the operator that the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system derate timer is active and has reached Stage 4. The system is actively counting down to a final derate condition (which typically results in a severe power reduction, forced idle, or engine shutdown) because an underlying emissions system issue has been ignored or left unresolved.

Check the cause

  1. Check for active root-cause codes using John Deere Service ADVISOR or a compatible J1939 scanner (look for underlying SCR faults such as DOC efficiency codes, DEF dosing unit faults, or NOx sensor communication errors)

  2. Verify that the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) tank is adequately filled with high-quality, unexpired DEF

  3. Inspect the SCR system for physical issues that trigger derate timers, such as crystallized DEF fluid around the dosing unit, a clogged DEF filter, or damaged wiring harnesses at the DEF head unit

  4. Review the operator manual for your specific machine's derate timeline to know exactly how many minutes of operation remain before forced idle

Repair steps

  1. Address the Root Cause

    Perform the specific diagnostic and repair procedure for the other active emissions codes found during your checks (e.g., replacing a failed DEF dosing pump, swapping a clogged DEF filter, or repairing a corroded wiring harness).

  2. Refill Fluids

    If the root cause was simply running out of fluid, refill the DEF tank completely.

  3. Reset the ECU

    Once the physical repair is complete, connect your diagnostic tool and clear the inactive fault codes.

  4. System Monitor / Forced Regen

    Depending on the severity of the derate and the root cause, you may need to use Service ADVISOR to command an aftertreatment system test or a forced stationary regeneration. This proves to the ECU that the emissions system is functioning properly, which will permanently clear the 005246.14 countdown timer and restore full engine power.
