John Deere 5435.14 – ECU: DEF Dosing Unit Pump Motor Fault

Issue description

The DEF dosing unit pump motor is sending an incorrect signal to the controller, or the pump is failing to build pressure during the priming phase. A highly common root cause for this specific code is an internal failure (cracking) of the dosing pump, which allows corrosive Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) to leak directly into the pump's electrical connector, shorting the signal.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the DEF Pump Connector: Disconnect the electrical connector going to the DEF dosing pump. If DEF fluid pours out of the connector or there is heavy crystallization inside the plug, the pump has failed internally and must be replaced.

  2. Inspect the Wiring Harness: Check the harness leading to the DEF pump for loose connections, rodent damage, or weather-related wire chafing.

  3. Software Pump Test: If no fluid is found in the connector, connect John Deere Service Advisor and run a DEF pump override test to see if the pump can successfully build and hold pressure.

  4. Check for Freezing: If operating in extreme cold, ensure the DEF tank and lines are fully thawed (using the machine's ProHeat system if equipped), as frozen DEF will prevent the pump from building pressure and trigger the code.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect the DEF module connector

    Verify the presence of DEF fluid inside the plug.

  2. Remove access panels

    Remove the necessary step assemblies or access panels over the DEF tank to access the dosing unit.

  3. Remove the failed DEF dosing unit pump

  4. Replace damaged electrical connector and pins

    Crucial Step: If DEF leaked into the wiring harness, you must cut out and replace the damaged electrical connector and pins on the machine side. Failing to do so will cause the new pump to short out.

  5. Install the new DEF dosing unit pump

    Plug in the repaired connector.

  6. Reinstall all access panels and brackets

  7. Clear the active code

    Connect a diagnostic tool to clear the active 005435.14 code.

  8. Verify the repair

    Start the machine and let it run to operating temperature. Perform a header coolant purge and a DEF system purge test to verify the repair.

  9. Perform a forced parked Service Regeneration

    Note: If the machine was operated with this code active, it likely entered an engine derate state, causing high soot accumulation. You may need to perform a forced parked Service Regeneration to clear the soot levels before returning the machine to the customer.
