Check the cause
Use a diagnostic scanner (such as John Deere EDL or TEXA) via the OBD/CAN port to confirm the 055010.31 code and check for any accompanying sensor or CAN bus communication codes
Load test the battery and check the alternator, as weak batteries or voltage spikes can corrupt sensor data and cause the ECU to log internal structural errors
Visually inspect the wiring harnesses and connections linked to the ECU for wear, corrosion, or loose connections, paying special attention to frame-edge routing and heat-exposed segments
Verify all ECU and chassis grounds are clean and tight, as a single loose ground bolt can create system-wide faults
Use a multimeter to test the sensors and electrical components connected to the ECU to ensure they are not shorting out the ECU's internal 5V reference circuit
Repair steps
Disconnect battery
Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical arcing.
Locate ECU
Locate the Engine Control Unit (ECU) on the engine block or firewall (depending on the machine model).
Disconnect wiring harnesses
Carefully disconnect the main wiring harness connectors from the ECU.
Remove ECU
Unbolt the ECU from its mounting bracket and remove it from the machine.
Repair or replace ECU
Option A (Repair): Send the unit to a specialized heavy-duty electronics repair service. Option B (Replace): Install a new or remanufactured OEM John Deere ECU.
Reconnect components
Reconnect the wiring harnesses and the battery.
Program replacement ECU
A replacement ECU will require programming/flashing with the correct software payload for your specific machine's Product Identification Number (PIN) and injector calibration codes using John Deere Service ADVISOR.
Clear codes and test
Clear all stored fault codes and test run the machine to verify performance.
