John Deere 598.31 – TIA, UIC, EPC: Clutch Pedal Switch, Malfunction or Signal Not Plausible

Issue description

The switch position of the clutch pedal switch (transmitted via CAN message) does not match the actual physical position of the clutch pedal determined by the clutch pedal potentiometer, resulting in limited or no function of the control software.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the Clutch Pedal Switch (component S72) for physical condition and mechanical operation

  2. Check the Clutch Pedal Potentiometer for proper function and verify if it is currently calibrated correctly

  3. Examine all wiring and connectors routed between the clutch pedal switch, the potentiometer, and the control unit for signs of physical damage, corrosion, or loose connections

  4. Verify the CAN BUS communication between the PTA control software and the clutch pedal components is functioning correctly

Repair steps

  1. Clean and secure connections

Clean and secure all wiring harness connections for the clutch pedal switch and potentiometer. Repair or replace any damaged wiring or connectors found during the diagnostic phase.

  2. Replace clutch pedal switch

If the clutch pedal switch is physically damaged or fails operational testing, replace the switch.

  3. Replace clutch pedal potentiometer

If the clutch pedal potentiometer is faulty or out of specification, replace the potentiometer.

  4. Calibrate potentiometer

Ensure the new or existing potentiometer is properly calibrated to the tractor's control unit so its signal matches the pedal's physical travel.

  5. Repair CAN BUS wiring

Repair any faults found in the CAN BUS wiring or connections.

  6. Consult technical support

If the hardware is replaced, wiring is sound, and the issue persists, consult technical support for further diagnostic procedures or potential control software updates.

  7. Perform regular maintenance

Regular maintenance, keeping the clutch pedal components clean and free from debris, is recommended to prevent the malfunction from returning.
