John Deere 604.02 – PTA: Transmission Enable Signal Faulty

The control software detects that the transmission enable signal (specifically neutral signal, lead 6064) coming from the transmission enable relay (K06/03 or K02/03) does not correspond to the physical position of the reverse drive lever, causing the system to limit or completely disable the function of the transmission.

   Test the transmission enable relay (K06/03 or K02/03) using a multimeter to verify voltage output and ensure it is not sticking

   Inspect the reverse drive lever sensor to verify it is functioning correctly and providing accurate position signals

   Check wiring and connectors (especially lead 6064) associated with the transmission enable relay and reverse drive lever for corrosion, disconnection, or a short circuit to a positive lead

   Verify that the transmission enable circuit is properly grounded, as bad grounds can cause voltage irregularities

   Ensure that the CAN bus is accurately transmitting the position of the reverse drive lever without interruptions

   Power Down

   Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery to ensure safety while working on the electrical system.

   Access the Relay Panel

   Locate the transmission enable relay (K06/03 or K02/03) in the tractor's fuse/relay panel.

   Replace the Relay

   If diagnostic tests showed the relay was sticking or outputting incorrect voltage, remove the old relay and install a new OEM 5-pin 12V relay.

   Inspect/Replace the Forward/Reverse Lever

   If the relay and wiring are intact but the lever sensor is providing inaccurate signals, the left-side forward and reverse lever assembly must be replaced. Remove the steering column covers to access the lever mounting bracket, disconnect the wiring harness, unbolt the lever, and install the new unit.

   Repair Wiring

   If a short to a positive lead was found on lead 6064, splice and repair the damaged section of the wiring harness using heat-shrink connectors.

   Reassemble and Calibrate

   Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition ON, and allow the control unit to run its boot sequence initialization. Clear the stored PTA/TCU 000604.02 code using a diagnostic tool and test the forward/reverse lever to ensure the transmission engages properly.
