John Deere 611.04 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Electronic Injector Wiring Shorted to Ground
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected a short circuit to ground on the supply voltage circuit that powers a specific bank of fuel injectors (Injectors 1 and 4 on 4-cylinder engines, or Injectors 1, 2, and 3 on 6-cylinder engines). When this wire shorts to the engine block or chassis ground, the ECU disables the circuit to protect itself, resulting in a severe engine misfire, loss of power, or engine shutdown.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the engine wiring harness routing from the ECU to the fuel injectors for chafing, melted insulation, or areas where the harness rubs against the engine block, valve cover, or brackets.
Perform a harness isolation test: Disconnect the main injector harness connector at the ECU and use a digital multimeter to check for continuity between the injector supply pins (for the affected cylinder bank) and a known good chassis ground.
Perform an injector isolation test: Disconnect the electrical connectors at the individual injectors (cylinders 1 and 4 on a 4-cyl; 1, 2, and 3 on a 6-cyl). Retest the harness for a short to ground. If the short goes away, test each injector's pins to its metal body to identify the internally shorted unit. If the short remains, the wiring harness is pinched or rubbed through.
Inspect the ECU connectors for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins, which can bridge a supply pin to a ground pin.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical arcing or ECU damage during repair.
Access the Harness/Injectors
Remove the engine covers or valve cover (if the engine utilizes under-cover injector wiring) to access the fuel injectors and their sub-harness.
Repair or Replace Wiring
If the diagnostic checks isolated the short to the wiring harness, carefully open the wire loom at the chafed area. Solder and heat-shrink the damaged wire, or replace the entire injector wiring harness if the damage is extensive or oil-soaked.
Replace Faulty Injector
If an injector tested shorted internally, remove the high-pressure fuel line, unbolt the injector hold-down clamp, and extract the injector. Install a new injector with new O-rings and copper sealing washers. Torque the hold-down bolt and fuel lines to the exact specifications found in your specific engine's CTM (Component Technical Manual).
Reassembly
Reconnect all electrical connectors and battery cables.
Clear Codes
Use a John Deere Service ADVISOR tool (or compatible heavy-duty scanner) to clear the 000611.04 code.
Test Run
Start the engine and verify that the misfire is gone and the code does not return.
