628.02

John Deere 628.02 – RPM (Direct Drive Range Module): Control Unit Internal Fault or EOL (End of Line) Data Fault

Issue description

The module detected an internal problem during its initialization/boot sequence, typically a failure to read its internal EEPROM memory where essential configuration data is stored.

Check the cause

  1. Power Cycle: Restart the tractor engine and cycle the key switch to see if the code clears from a temporary voltage drop.

  2. Check for Voltage Codes: Look for other active codes (such as 158.xx or 168.xx) that indicate low or high supply voltage to the module.

  3. Inspect Wiring and Power Supply: Verify that the RPM module is receiving a stable power supply within the specified voltage range. Inspect the harness connections for corrosion, damage, or loose pins.

  4. Software Check: Connect John Deere Service ADVISOR to see if the module is communicating and check if a firmware update is available to resolve corrupted EEPROM data.

Repair steps

  1. Safe Shutdown

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the park brake, and turn off the engine. Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Module

Locate the DirectDrive Transmission Controller (RPM) on the tractor (typically mounted near the transmission housing or in the cab load center area, depending on the exact 6R chassis configuration).

  3. Remove the Faulty Module

Disconnect the wiring harness connectors from the module. Remove the mounting hardware and extract the failed RPM module.

  4. Install the New Module

Mount the replacement RPM module and securely reconnect the wiring harnesses. Reconnect the battery.

  5. Reprogram and Calibrate

Connect John Deere Service ADVISOR to program the module with the tractor's specific End of Line (EOL) payload data.

  6. Transmission Calibration

Once programmed, bring the tractor up to operating temperature and perform a full DirectDrive transmission calibration procedure via Service ADVISOR to ensure smooth shifting and clutch engagement.
