John Deere 628.13 – Engine Interface Control Unit (EIC): Control Unit Internal Fault

Issue description

The module experienced an electronic malfunction, failed its internal self-test during startup, lost its calibration data, or is stuck in Bootmode.

Cycle power by turning the key switch off, waiting a few moments, and restarting the tractor to see if a temporary glitch caused the error
Check battery and supply voltage during cranking, and load-test the battery to ensure a voltage drop is not causing the boot failure
Inspect the wiring harness and grounds leading to the EIC for loose pins, corrosion, or poor connections that could interrupt power
Connect John Deere Service ADVISOR to see if the boot issue can be resolved by flashing the EIC with the latest software update
Visually inspect the EIC housing for physical damage, cracks, or signs of water and moisture ingress

Disconnect Power
Always disconnect the negative battery cable before working on electronic control units to prevent short circuits.
Locate the EIC
Access the Engine Interface Control Unit (location varies by cab/open-station configuration, typically found under the dash/cowl area or behind the right-hand console).
Disconnect Harnesses
Carefully release the locking tabs and unplug the multi-pin wiring harness connectors from the EIC.
Remove the Module
Remove the hold-down bolts or mounting clamps securing the EIC to its bracket and remove the faulty unit.
Install the New Module
Mount the replacement EIC and secure the fasteners.
Reconnect
Plug in the wiring harnesses, ensuring the connectors click securely into place. Reconnect the battery.
Calibration/Programming
Connect John Deere Service ADVISOR to upload the tractor's specific configuration data (Payload) and calibrate the module to the machine's CAN bus network.
