John Deere 628.13 – PTF: Control Unit Internal Fault

Issue description

An electronic malfunction or internal software configuration issue is registered within the control unit during its boot sequence. The module is failing its internal self-check or is stuck in boot mode.

Applies to these machines

  • 6120M
  • 6130M
  • 6145M
  • 6155M
  • 6175M

Check the cause

  1. Restart the tractor by cycling the key to force the module to attempt a new boot sequence and check if the code clears

  2. Check for other accompanying CAN BUS communication codes (e.g., 'PTF Message Missing' or 'Loss of CAN Messages') to see if the module dropped off the network

  3. Visually inspect the Front Chassis Module (PTF) for physical damage, water ingress, or burnt components

  4. Test power and ground connections to verify the module is receiving proper voltage (no over/under-voltage) and has a clean ground connection

  5. Check if a software update is available, as a dealer reflash may resolve an internal boot loop

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Module

Locate the Front Chassis Module (PTF) on the machine's front chassis frame.

  3. Disconnect

Carefully unplug the CAN BUS and power wiring harness connectors from the module.

  4. Remove

Unbolt the mounting hardware securing the faulty module to the chassis and remove it.

  5. Install

Mount the new Front Chassis Module and secure the hardware.

  6. Reconnect

Reconnect the wiring harnesses and restore battery power.

  7. Calibration/Programming

A John Deere dealer must connect Service ADVISOR to program the End-of-Line (EOL) software and calibrate the module to the specific tractor's CAN network.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Front Chassis Module (PTF)

Varies heavily by exact tractor model, year, and serial number. Must be programmed by a dealer post-installation; plug-and-play is not possible.
