629.02

John Deere 629.02 – Cab Control Module (DOI) or Steering System Control Unit (XMC): Control Software Internal Fault / EEPROM Read Error

Issue description

The module experienced a fault during the software launch or initialization process. The controller detected an internal issue with its software configuration, failed to read its internal memory (EEPROM), or has corrupted software.

Check the cause

  1. Restart the tractor (key cycle) to see if the software launch error was a one-time glitch.

  2. Look for other active codes (such as CAN-BUS errors or voltage codes like 000168.03/04) that might indicate the module is simply losing power or communication.

  3. Check the unswitched supply voltage to the module (e.g., check related fuses like F23 for steering systems) and ensure the battery is fully charged.

  4. Check if the system is logging hardware self-test failures (e.g., XMC 000702.12) alongside the software code.

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

Connect John Deere Service ADVISOR to the machine.

  2. Reprogram the Module

Flash the affected module (DOI or XMC) with the latest software payload.

  3. Wait for Completion

Do not interrupt the programming sequence, as this can permanently brick the module.

  4. Calibrate

Once the software update is complete, perform any necessary module configurations and calibrations as prompted by Service ADVISOR.

  5. Clear Codes

Delete the diagnostic trouble codes and cycle the key.

  6. Hardware Replacement (If Necessary)

If the module refuses to take the programming, if the software update fails, or if the 000629.02 code immediately returns, the internal EEPROM hardware has physically failed. The control module must be replaced.
