   Restart and Rescan: Restart the tractor and check if the code is active or stored. Check for any accompanying codes (like voltage or CAN bus errors) that might indicate a wiring issue rather than a module failure.

   Inspect Electrical Connections: Check the main harness connections to the ECU for looseness, bent pins, moisture, or corrosion.

   Test Battery and Charging System: Ensure the battery is fully charged and the alternator is providing stable voltage. Low voltage during cranking can cause EEPROM read errors.

   Evaluate Grounding: Examine the wiring harness for insufficient grounding or chafed wires shorting to the chassis.

   Clear and Reset

   Use John Deere Service ADVISOR (or a compatible diagnostic tool) to clear the fault codes and reset the ECU. Run the machine to see if the code returns.

   Software Flash

   If the code returns immediately, the EEPROM software may be corrupted. A John Deere dealer can attempt to re-flash/reprogram the ECU with the latest software payload.

   Module Replacement

   If the ECU refuses to take a flash or the EEPROM hardware is physically damaged (which is common with this specific FMI 02 code), the Engine Control Unit must be replaced.

   Programming the New ECU

   Install the new ECU. Note: Replacement ECUs are shipped blank. You must use John Deere Service ADVISOR to program the new module with the specific payload for your machine's VIN/serial number before the tractor will start.
