John Deere 630.31 – TCU / VLC / BLC: Calibration Parameters Saving Fault / Control Software Internal Fault

Issue description

The control unit has experienced an internal memory error (RAM/EEPROM corruption) or a condition exists preventing it from successfully saving the calibration parameters to its non-volatile memory. When this occurs in the context of the front axle, it means the Suspended Front Axle (SFA) or Triple Link Suspension (TLS) calibration values could not be stored.

Check the cause

  1. Check the front axle position sensor voltage via the tractor's diagnostic display or Service ADVISOR. The signal value should be between 1.2V - 1.3V on the lower mechanical stop and between 3.3V - 4.2V on the upper mechanical stop.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness between the front axle position sensor and the control unit (TCU/VLC/BLC) for chafing, shorts to ground, or poor pin connections.

  3. Look for accompanying active sensor voltage codes (e.g., 523950.03 - Voltage High) or CAN Bus communication errors (e.g., 000639.31) which might be the root cause preventing the calibration from saving.

Repair steps

  1. Secure the Machine

Park the tractor on a level surface, apply the parking brake, and block the rear wheels to prevent inadvertent movement during suspension travel.

  2. Adjust the Sensor

If the diagnostic voltage checks are outside the specified range, physically adjust the position of the front axle position sensor bracket until the voltages fall within the 1.2V (low) to 4.2V (high) window.

  3. Clear Codes

Clear the existing 000630.31 fault code from the control unit's memory.

  4. Run Calibration

Initiate the Suspended Front Axle (SFA) / TLS calibration procedure via the tractor's display monitor or John Deere Service ADVISOR. The suspension will automatically move up and down through its complete mechanical range.

  5. Module Flash/Replacement

If the calibration completes its physical travel but the 000630.31 code immediately returns, the control unit (TCU/VLC/BLC) has suffered an internal memory failure. The module will require a software re-flash by a dealer. If the re-flash fails, the control unit must be replaced.

Parts you might need

(4)
  • Front Axle Position Sensor

    RE334232

Common on 7R/8R series. Verify exact part number by machine serial number.

  • Front Axle Position Sensor

    AL155986

Common on TLS axles. Verify exact part number by machine serial number.

  • Front Axle Position Sensor

    RE575331

7020/7030/8030 series. Verify exact part number by machine serial number.

  • Control Unit (TCU / VLC / BLC)

Must be ordered specific to the tractor's VIN/Serial number and requires dealer programming (payload) upon installation.
