John Deere 636.1 – ECU (Engine Control Unit): Camshaft Position Sensor Input Pattern Error

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit is receiving an erratic, incorrect, or missing pulse pattern from the camshaft position sensor. This loss of synchronization between the camshaft and crankshaft can result in excessive cranking, engine derating, heavy white smoke, or a complete no-start condition.

Check the cause

  1. Monitor RPM Data: Access the machine's diagnostic/troubleshooting menu and observe the live Cam and Crank RPM data while cranking or idling. The crank RPM should remain steady, while a failing cam sensor circuit will often show erratic spikes.

  2. Inspect Wiring and Connectors: Check the wiring harness from the camshaft position sensor directly to the ECU. Look for shorts to high voltage, open ground circuits, or chafed wires. Use electrical contact cleaner on the sensor connector.

  3. Check the Fuse Panel: Verify all ECU and sensor fuses are intact, as a shorted camshaft position sensor can blow an engine system fuse.

  4. Inspect the Cam Gear: If the sensor and wiring test fine, remove the fuel pump or access cover to inspect the camshaft gear for missing teeth or debris.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Sensor

    Find the camshaft position sensor. Depending on the engine model, it is typically located behind the injection pump, near the fuel metering block, or on the front gear cover.

  2. Disconnect and Remove

    Disconnect the electrical harness connector. Remove the retaining bolt(s) and pull the sensor out of the housing.

  3. Inspect for Damage

    Check the magnetic tip of the old sensor for physical damage, metal shavings, or oil intrusion, which can disrupt the magnetic pulse.

  4. Install the New Sensor

    Insert the replacement camshaft position sensor, ensuring the O-ring is properly seated. Torque the retaining bolt to OEM specifications.

  5. Reconnect and Route Wiring

    Reconnect the wiring harness. If the original harness was damaged, you may need to run a new shielded, double-insulated wire directly to the ECU and ensure the shield is properly grounded to the ECU case.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

    Clear the 000636.10 fault code via the diagnostic monitor. Start the engine and verify that the code does not return and that the engine no longer derates or surges.
