639.12

John Deere 639.12 – CSM: Vehicle CAN Bus, High Error Rate / CAN Message Overflow

Issue description

The reporting control unit is receiving an excessively high number of incorrect CAN Bus messages, or it has detected a general communication failure/interference on the vehicle's CAN Bus network (operating at 500 kBd).

Applies to these machines

  • 6110R
  • 6120R
  • 6130R
  • 6145R
  • 6155R
  • 6175R
  • 6195R
  • 6215R
  • 7R Series
  • 8R Series
  • 9230
  • 9330
  • 9430
  • 9530
  • 9630
  • 8000 Series Forage Harvesters

Check the cause

  1. Cycle power by restarting the tractor or cycling the key switch to see if the code clears (indicates a temporary CAN message overflow)

  2. Verify battery voltage and check the fuses supplying the CSM, as low voltage or a failing alternator can cause modules to drop off the CAN bus

  3. Inspect the wiring harness connecting to the Cab Switch Module on the CommandARM for pinched wires, poor connections, or interference

  4. Perform a CAN Bus resistance test with the battery disconnected by measuring resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the CSM connector (should read approximately 60 ohms)

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Access the CSM

Remove the necessary trim panels on the CommandARM console to access the Cab Switch Module.

  3. Inspect and Clean

Disconnect the main wiring harness from the CSM. Inspect the pins on both the module and the harness for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back pins. Clean with contact cleaner if necessary.

  4. Repair Harness

If the CAN bus wires (typically twisted pair) are chafed or broken, repair the wiring using OEM-approved splicing methods and heat shrink.

  5. Re-test

Reconnect the module and the battery. Start the tractor.

  6. Module Replacement/Reprogramming

If the wiring is perfectly intact, the voltage is correct, and the 000639.12 code remains active, the CSM has likely suffered an internal failure. Replace the Cab Switch Module. Note: A new CSM may require software calibration/programming by a John Deere dealer using Service ADVISOR to pair it with the tractor's ECM.
