639.12

John Deere 639.12 – TIA: Vehicle CAN Bus High Error Rate

Issue description

The TIA (Tractor Implement Automation) control software is unable to process all CAN Bus messages due to an excessively high error rate or CAN message overflow. This is typically caused by a CAN bus overload, faulty nodes on the network, damaged wiring, or an internal software fault.

Applies to these machines

  • 6110R
  • 6120R
  • 6130R
  • 6145R
  • 6155R
  • 6175R
  • 6195R
  • 6215R
  • 7210R
  • 7230R
  • 7250R
  • 7270R
  • 7290R
  • 7310R
  • 8235R
  • 8260R
  • 8285R
  • 8310R
  • 8335R
  • 8360R

Check the cause

  1. Inspect all CAN bus connections between the tractor's ISOBUS connector and the implement for loose pins, corrosion, or moisture.

  2. Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness for chafing, breaks, or shorts to ground/power.

  3. Check the CommandCenter display to ensure the TIA control software and the implement's software are updated to the latest versions.

  4. Disconnect the implement from the tractor's ISOBUS connector to isolate the fault. If the high error rate stops, the fault is likely on the implement side or the connection point. If it persists, the fault is on the tractor's internal CAN network.

  5. Test the CAN bus terminating resistors with a multimeter (should read approximately 60 ohms across the CAN High and CAN Low pins when the battery is disconnected).

Repair steps

  1. Power down machine

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical damage during repairs.

  2. Repair or replace wiring

If the diagnostic checks revealed damaged wiring or connectors in the CAN bus harness, repair the wires or replace the affected harness section.

  3. Replace terminating resistors

If a terminating resistor tested out of spec, replace it to restore proper CAN network communication.

  4. Update software

Reconnect the battery and power on the machine. Use John Deere Service ADVISOR to flash the latest firmware to the TIA module and the CommandCenter display.

  5. Clear codes and test

Clear the 000639.12 fault code. Reconnect the implement and operate the TIA functions to verify that the CAN bus error rate has normalized and the code does not return.
