John Deere 641.06 – ECU: VGT Actuator Drive Circuit Has Low Resistance
Issue description
The circuit resistance has dropped below the acceptable threshold, which indicates a short to ground in the actuator's wiring harness or an internal short within the actuator's electronic motor/circuit board.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the VGT actuator for signs of chafing, melted wires, corrosion, or fluid intrusion (coolant/oil), which commonly cause shorts to ground.
Use a multimeter to measure the resistance in the actuator circuit to pinpoint where the short to ground is occurring.
Physically separate the actuator from the turbocharger and manually move the turbocharger's sector gear (vanes) by hand from stop to stop. If the gear binds, the turbocharger is seized (which can cause the actuator to overheat and short). If it moves freely, the fault is isolated to the actuator or wiring.
Repair steps
Resolve Wiring Issues
If the multimeter test reveals a short in the harness, repair or replace the damaged wires/connectors to restore proper current flow.
Replace the Actuator
If the wiring is intact but the actuator has an internal short, remove the faulty VGT actuator.
Install the New Actuator
Mount the new actuator to the turbocharger. Crucial: Ensure proper alignment of the turbocharger sector gear while mounting the actuator.
Perform Calibration / Learning Cycle
A new VGT actuator must be calibrated to the turbocharger. Use a John Deere diagnostic tool (like Service Advisor) to run the VGT actuator learning procedure. Note: If the actuator fails the learning cycle (triggering a secondary 000641.07 code), it may be improperly aligned. It must be removed, unplugged for 30 seconds, and the sector gear placed into the correct fully clockwise position before retrying.
Clear Codes and Test
Reset the ECU to clear the 000641.06 code. Run the engine and verify proper turbocharger operation and boost pressure without the code returning.
