SPN 641 FMI 16

John Deere SPN 641 FMI 16 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Turbo Actuator Temperature Moderately High

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit receives a message from the Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) actuator indicating that its internal temperature has exceeded normal operating specifications.

Check the cause

  1. Reduce engine speed and load immediately to prevent component damage

  2. Check the cooling system and radiator grilles for debris that could restrict airflow and cause elevated under-hood and actuator temperatures

  3. Inspect the intake air system and Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system for blockages, leaks, or faults

  4. Check the VGT actuator sensor and wiring harness for melting, chafing, or poor ground connections

  5. Remove the actuator and check if the turbocharger's sector gear turns freely by hand to determine if the issue is mechanical soot buildup or a failing actuator

Repair steps

  1. Cool down machine

Safely park the machine, turn off the engine, and allow the exhaust and turbocharger components to cool completely.

  2. Clear debris

Clear any debris from the radiator, coolers, and engine bay to ensure proper ambient cooling.

  3. Inspect wiring

Inspect the wiring harness leading to the VGT actuator. Repair any damaged wires or connectors.

  4. Remove VGT actuator

If the cooling system and wiring are intact, remove the VGT actuator from the turbocharger.

  5. Check sector gear

Manually actuate the turbocharger's sector gear. If it binds, the turbocharger must be removed and cleaned of soot, or replaced entirely.

  6. Replace VGT actuator

If the turbocharger mechanism moves freely, the VGT electronic actuator has failed internally and must be replaced.

  7. Install new actuator

Install the new VGT actuator using the appropriate installation hardware kit.

  8. Calibrate actuator

The new actuator must be calibrated to the turbocharger using John Deere Service ADVISOR or equivalent OEM diagnostic equipment.

  9. Test run

Clear the fault codes and test run the machine under load to verify the repair.
