John Deere 647.05 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Variable Speed Engine Cooling Fan Solenoid Output Voltage or Current Below Normal

Issue description

The Engine Module has detected an issue with the output voltage or current for the Variable Speed Engine Cooling Fan Solenoid (Y28). The voltage or current is below normal, indicating an open circuit, high resistance, or a short in the Upper Fan Drive Output 1 circuit. The ECU may limit certain machine functions (like park lock) to prevent damage.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring leads and connectors on the solenoid coil (located directly above the fan drive piston housing or on the charge air cooler hydraulic motor manifold) for signs of physical damage, corrosion, or disconnection.

  2. Measure the current and resistance in the circuit using a multimeter. The Proportional Fan Speed Solenoid (Y8/Y28) should typically measure between 20-30 ohms.

  3. Check for intermittent faults to determine if the DTC periodically goes away, which indicates a loose connection or chafed wire rather than a completely failed solenoid.

  4. Restart the engine to verify if the active DTC reappears and to reset communication messages.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Turn off the engine, remove the key, and allow the engine to cool. Relieve any hydraulic pressure if you are working directly on the hydraulic fan motor lines.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the proportional fan speed solenoid valve (Y28) situated above the fan drive piston housing.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed chafed wires or corroded connector pins, repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring harness.

  4. Replace the Solenoid

    If the wiring is intact but the solenoid fails the resistance test (or has an internal open circuit), disconnect the electrical harness from the solenoid.

  5. Install New Valve

    Unthread the faulty solenoid valve from the manifold/piston housing and install the genuine John Deere replacement part.

  6. Reassemble and Test

    Reconnect the wiring harness. Start the engine, bring it up to operating temperature (above 200°F / 93°C to allow thermostats to open), and run the engine under load to verify that the cooling fan operates at variable speeds without triggering the 000647.05 code.
