John Deere 647.05 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Fan Proportional Solenoid Out of Range Low / Fan Drive Output 1 Shorted or Open
Issue description
The control module has detected an open circuit, high resistance, or a short-to-power in the variable-speed engine cooling fan solenoid circuit (Y28 solenoid). Because this is a Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) circuit, the ECU relies on specific current feedback. When this circuit fails or loses communication, the hydraulic fan defaults to maximum speed to prevent the engine from overheating.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring leads and harness connectors on the solenoid coil located directly above the fan drive piston housing / hydraulic fan drive motor for rubbed wires, corrosion, or disconnected pins.
Unplug the fan proportional solenoid (Y28) and measure its resistance with a multimeter. A healthy OEM solenoid should measure approximately 27 to 30 ohms. If it reads out of limits (OL) or significantly lower, the coil is internally shorted/open.
With the ignition ON and the engine OFF, probe the harness side of the connector. There should be no voltage going to the solenoid in this state. If voltage is present, there is a short-to-power in the wiring harness tricking the ECU into reading an open circuit.
Repair steps
Safety First
Turn off the machine, engage the parking brake, and allow the engine and hydraulic system to cool.
Locate the Solenoid
Find the fan proportional solenoid valve (Y28) on the hydraulic fan drive block/piston housing.
Disconnect the Harness
Unplug the electrical connector from the solenoid. If the connector is heavily corroded, splice in a new pigtail connector using heat-shrink butt connectors.
Remove the Solenoid Coil
If the diagnostic tests point to a failed coil, remove the retaining nut at the top of the solenoid stem and slide the old coil off.
Replace the Cartridge Valve (If necessary)
If the hydraulic valve itself is stuck or leaking, relieve the hydraulic system pressure. Unscrew the cartridge valve from the block. Lubricate the O-rings on the new valve with clean hydraulic fluid, thread it into the block, and torque to the manufacturer's specification.
Install the New Coil
Slide the new solenoid coil over the valve stem and secure it with the retaining nut.
Reassemble and Test
Reconnect the wiring harness. Turn the ignition on, clear the stored ECU 000647.05 code using your diagnostic monitor, and start the engine. Verify that the fan operates at a variable speed (it should run slower at idle and ramp up as the engine warms up or under load) rather than roaring at full speed.
