John Deere 647.06 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Engine Module Has Noted An Issue With The Output Voltage For The Variable Speed Engine Cooling Fan Solenoid
Issue description
The controller has detected that the current at the proportional solenoid valve for the variable speed fan (or charge air cooler hydraulic motor) is too high. This condition points directly to a short circuit or a grounded circuit in the fan speed control circuit, which causes the fan coil output driver to read out of range high.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring and connectors leading to the variable speed fan proportional solenoid valve (Y5005) for rubbed-through wire insulation, melted wires, or signs of grounding against the chassis.
Disconnect the harness connection at the variable speed fan solenoid (Y5005) and at the ECU-to-engine interface harness connector (e.g., X16). Ensure the pins are in good condition and free of corrosion, moisture, or debris.
Use a digital multimeter to measure the resistance in the circuit to locate the short. Check for continuity to ground on the signal wire.
Test the variable speed fan solenoid itself. If the wiring harness tests fine but the solenoid shows internal low resistance or shorting, the solenoid is the point of failure.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn the machine off and switch the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position before beginning electrical repairs.
Wiring Repair
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the engine interface harness, repair or replace the damaged wiring/connector.
Solenoid Replacement
Disconnect the electrical connector from the variable speed fan solenoid. Relieve hydraulic pressure, then disconnect the hydraulic hoses attached to the fan motor/solenoid block. Remove the faulty proportional solenoid valve from the fan drive manifold. Install the new variable speed fan solenoid. Tighten the locking nuts to the OEM torque specification. Reconnect the hydraulic lines and plug in the electrical harness connector.
Verification
Turn the battery disconnect switch back to the ON position. Clear the ECU fault codes using a diagnostic tool, start the engine, and perform a system test to ensure the fan operates correctly and the current remains within the specified range.
