John Deere 652.05 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Injector Number 2 Circuit Has High Resistance

Issue description

The controller has detected that the electrical current traveling to the electronic fuel injector for cylinder #2 is less than expected, indicating an open circuit, a broken wire, a loose connection, or a failed injector solenoid coil.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to the cylinder #2 fuel injector. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or physical breaks.

  2. Disconnect the harness at the #2 injector and at the ECU. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back terminals.

  3. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the terminals of the #2 injector solenoid. If the reading shows an open circuit (infinite resistance) or is significantly higher than the manufacturer's specification, the injector solenoid has failed internally.

  4. If the injector tests within spec, check the continuity of the wiring harness between the ECU connector and the injector connector to confirm if the open circuit is in the wiring.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect power

    Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.

  2. Access the injector

    Remove any engine covers, valve covers, or intake components necessary to access the fuel rail and cylinder #2 injector.

  3. Address the root cause

    If the wiring is faulty (wiring cause): Repair the broken wire using proper soldering and heat-shrink techniques, or replace the injector wiring harness section. If the injector is faulty (solenoid cause): Disconnect the high-pressure fuel line from the common rail to the #2 injector. Remove the injector hold-down clamp and carefully extract the injector from the cylinder head.

  4. Install the new injector

    Clean the injector bore. Install the new injector with new O-rings and copper sealing washers. Torque the hold-down clamp and the high-pressure fuel lines to the exact specifications found in your machine's service manual.

  5. Reassemble and bleed

    Reconnect the electrical harness. Reinstall all removed engine covers. Prime the fuel system to bleed out any air.

  6. Clear codes and calibrate

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the 000652.05 fault code. Start the engine and verify that it runs smoothly without the code returning. Depending on the engine model, the new injector's QR calibration code may need to be programmed into the ECU using a diagnostic tool.
