Issue description

The Engine Control Unit detects that the electrical current in the cylinder #3 electronic fuel injector circuit is below normal, indicating an open circuit or unusually high resistance. This prevents the injector from firing properly, which can lead to engine misfires, skipping, or rough running.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness between the ECU and the #3 fuel injector for chafing, breaks, or melted insulation.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the ECU 60-way connector and the injector connector. Inspect the pins for dirt, corrosion, damage, or poor positioning (pushed-out pins).

  3. Circuit Testing: Measure the resistance of the wiring harness for cylinder #3 to check for an open circuit. Crucial OEM Warning: Do not force standard multimeter probes directly into the connector terminals, as this will cause permanent terminal damage. John Deere mandates the use of the JT07328 Connector Adapter Test Kit to make measurements safely.

  4. Component Testing: Measure the resistance across the solenoid pins on the #3 injector itself to determine if the internal coil has failed open.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Turn off the key switch, disconnect the negative battery cable, and relieve any residual fuel pressure if you will be removing the injector.

  2. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

    If the diagnostic checks reveal a broken wire or corroded connector between the ECU and the injector, repair the wiring harness or replace the damaged connector pins.

  3. Replace Injector (If Applicable)

    If the wiring and connectors test good but the injector solenoid has high resistance/open circuit: Remove the valve cover or electronic injector (EI) cover to access the injector. Disconnect the injector wiring harness. Remove the hold-down clamp and extract the faulty #3 injector. Install the new injector with new O-rings/seals. Torque the hold-down clamp to OEM specifications for your specific engine model. Reconnect the injector harness and reinstall the covers.

  4. Calibration

    Depending on the engine generation, a new injector may require its specific QR code or calibration part number to be programmed into the ECU using John Deere Service ADVISOR.

  5. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and clear the stored fault codes. Start the engine and verify the misfire is gone and the code does not return.
