John Deere 653.18 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Injector Number 3 Error

Issue description

Triggered when the control module detects that the fuel flow from injection valve #3 is lower than expected or the injector is failing to respond to command signals. This condition leads to improper fuel delivery, engine misfires, and overall poor engine performance.

Check the cause

  1. Check fuel supply and pressure: Inspect the fuel tank level and check fuel filters for clogs or water contamination, as low fuel pressure can cause injector flow issues.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness: Check the wiring circuit to Injector #3 for chafed wires, loose connections, or corrosion (related codes 653.05/653.06 indicate wiring failures).

  3. Check for ECU software updates: Verify with a dealer if the machine requires an ECU software update to resolve nuisance DTCs (per DTAC Solution 117409) before tearing down the engine.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

    Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery. Clean the area around the fuel rail and injectors thoroughly to prevent debris from entering the engine.

  2. Relieve Fuel Pressure

    Safely relieve the high-pressure fuel system according to the specific engine's service manual.

  3. Remove Components

    Disconnect the electrical harness connector from Injector #3. Remove the high-pressure fuel line connecting the fuel rail to the injector. (Always cap open fuel lines immediately).

  4. Extract the Injector

    Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt and carefully pull Injector #3 from the cylinder head.

  5. Install the New Injector

    Lubricate the new injector O-rings with clean engine oil. Seat the new injector into the bore, install the hold-down clamp, and torque to OEM specifications.

  6. Reassemble

    Reconnect the high-pressure fuel line and the electrical harness.

  7. ECU Calibration

    Use a John Deere diagnostic tool (Service ADVISOR) to program the new injector's calibration QR code or trim code into the ECU. Failure to do so will result in fault code 000653.13.

  8. Test

    Reconnect the battery, prime the fuel system, start the engine, and check for leaks. Clear the fault codes and verify that 000653.18 does not return.
