John Deere 654.05 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Injector Number 4 Circuit Has High Resistance / Cylinder #4 Electronic Injector Circuit Open

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected an open circuit or abnormally high electrical resistance in the electronic unit injector (EUI) circuit for engine cylinder number 4. This condition prevents the injector from receiving the proper voltage, which can result in a failure to deliver fuel to that cylinder, causing rough idling, loss of power, and potential engine damage.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the cylinder #4 injector for signs of chafing, heat damage, corrosion, or loose/disconnected pins.

  2. Use a digital multimeter to measure the resistance in the injector circuit. Check for continuity between the ECU connector and the injector connector to confirm if the open circuit is in the wiring harness.

  3. Measure the resistance across the pins of the cylinder #4 injector itself. If the resistance is out of specification (infinite/open), the injector solenoid has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

  2. Address Wiring Issues

    If the multimeter test revealed an open circuit in the harness, repair the damaged wire or replace the injector wiring harness. Ensure all connectors are clean and seated firmly.

  3. Replace the Injector

    If the wiring is intact but the injector solenoid failed the resistance test, remove the valve cover (if required by the engine model) and extract the faulty cylinder #4 injector. Install the new OEM replacement injector, ensuring all O-rings and seals are properly seated and lubricated.

  4. Reassemble and Reconnect

    Reinstall any removed engine components and reconnect the battery.

  5. Test and Clear Codes

    Turn the key to the ON position. Reset the ECU / clear the diagnostic trouble codes. Start the engine and perform a system test to confirm that the injector is receiving correct voltage, the engine runs smoothly, and the 000654.05 code does not return. (Note: Some newer injectors may require the QR code/calibration code to be programmed into the ECU using John Deere Service ADVISOR software).
