654.06

John Deere 654.06 – ECU: Injector Number 4 Low Resistance Error

Issue description

The controller has detected a short circuit in the electronic fuel injector circuit for cylinder number 4. The resistance in the circuit is too low, causing the electrical current to cylinder 4's injector to increase too rapidly.

Check the cause

  1. Cycle the power by restarting the engine to verify if the active DTC reappears, ruling out a temporary communication glitch.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness leading from the ECU to Injector #4 for chafing, melting, or exposed wires that could be shorting to ground or shorting to power.

  3. Disconnect the electrical connector at Injector #4 and use a multimeter to measure the internal resistance of the injector solenoid. Compare it to the OEM specification (a reading of near-zero ohms indicates an internal short).

  4. Inspect the ECU connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or bent pins that could bridge the circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Battery

Always disconnect the battery before servicing ECU wiring or fuel system components.

  2. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks reveal a short in the wiring harness, repair the damaged section of the wire or replace the injector harness entirely.

  3. Replace Injector

If the wiring is intact but the injector itself has an internal short (low resistance), remove the high-pressure fuel lines and the hold-down clamp for Injector #4. Extract the faulty injector and install the new one with new O-rings and copper sealing washers.

  4. ECU Calibration

Use a John Deere diagnostic tool (Service ADVISOR) to program the new injector's calibration code (QR code) into the ECU.

  5. Clear Codes and Test

Reconnect the battery, clear the stored fault codes from the ECU, and run the engine to ensure there are no fuel leaks and the code does not return.
