John Deere 704.09 – Steering System Control Unit: Control Software Internal Fault

The control software has failed to perform its internal self-test upon startup. This failure can be caused by corrupted software, internal hardware issues within the module, or other internal faults that prevent the system from verifying its operational status.

   Reboot the system by cycling the tractor's key off and back on to see if the module can successfully pass its self-test on a fresh startup.

   Check for accompanying CAN bus communication or voltage codes that might indicate a wiring harness issue rather than an internal module failure.

   Connect diagnostic tool

   Connect a John Deere diagnostic tool (Service ADVISOR) to the machine.

   Reprogram control unit

   Attempt to reprogram the steering control unit (XMC/BCU) using the most current software payload file.

   Perform calibrations

   Perform all necessary steering configurations and calibrations required after a software flash.

   Clear codes and restart

   Clear the diagnostic trouble codes and restart the tractor.

   Replace control unit

   If the control unit cannot be reprogrammed, or if the code immediately returns after the update, the internal hardware of the module has failed. Replace the Steering System Control Unit.
