John Deere 709.1 – XMC / XSC / XMA / TMA / PSC: Steering Wheel Position Sensor Channel 2, Fault

The controller has detected an abnormal rate of change or a signal mismatch on Channel 2 of the Steering Input Device (SID), conflicting with Channel 1. AutoTrac and auto-guidance functions are typically disabled for safety.

   Clear and Retest: Clear the DTCs via the CommandCenter display, cycle the key, and turn the steering wheel to see if the code returns immediately to rule out intermittent voltage drops.

   Harness & Connector Inspection: Remove the steering column cowl/covers and inspect the wiring harness connecting the Steering Input Device (SID) to the steering module for chafing, pinched wires, or loose pins.

   Channel Swap Test: Interchange the steering wheel position sensor connectors at the SID. If the same DTC (Channel 2) returns, the issue is likely in the wiring harness between the SID and the control module. If the DTC shifts to Channel 1, the Steering Input Device (sensor) itself has failed internally.

   Prepare machine

   Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts or accidental module damage.

   Remove steering column covers

   Remove the plastic covers/cowl surrounding the steering column (just below the steering wheel) to access the Steering Input Device (SID).

   Disconnect electrical harness

   Disconnect the electrical harness connectors from the steering wheel position sensor.

   Remove faulty sensor

   Unbolt and remove the faulty rotary position sensor from the steering column shaft.

   Install new sensor

   Install the new OEM steering wheel position sensor and torque the mounting hardware to OEM spec.

   Reconnect harness

   Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the connectors click firmly into place.

   Reassemble and reconnect battery

   Reinstall the steering column covers and reconnect the battery.

   Clear codes and calibrate

   Power on the machine and use the CommandCenter display (or John Deere Service ADVISOR) to clear the stored fault codes. You must perform a Steering Input Device (SID) calibration and a Wheel Angle Sensor (WAS) calibration, or the system will not recognize the new sensor and AutoTrac will remain disabled.
