John Deere 709.16 – XMC (Steering System Control Unit): Frequency on Channel 2 of Steering Input Device (SID) Too High

   Perform a reboot test: Stop the machine, turn the key off, wait, restart, clear codes, and turn the steering wheel to see if the code returns (transient glitch)

   Inspect the Steering Input Device (SID) wiring harness under the steering column cowl for chafing, pinched wires, or corroded connector pins

   Perform a sensor swap test: Interchange the steering wheel position sensor connectors at the SID. If the same DTC (Channel 2) returns, the wiring harness to the XMC is faulty. If a different DTC (Channel 1) appears, the SID itself has failed internally

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery ground to prevent electrical spikes.

   Access the SID

   Remove the plastic covers/cowl surrounding the steering column to expose the Steering Input Device and its harness.

   Replace the Harness

   If the swap test indicated a wiring fault, disconnect the harness from the SID and the main cab harness junction. Install the new wiring harness (e.g., RE68906) and route it exactly as the original to prevent pinching.

   Replace the SID

   If the sensor itself failed, unbolt the Steering Input Device / Steering Module Brake assembly from the steering column. Install the new unit and torque the mounting bolts to OEM spec.

   Reassembly & Calibration

   Reconnect the battery. Turn the key on and use John Deere Service ADVISOR (or the CommandCenter display, depending on the model) to clear the stored XMC/XSC codes.

   Software Check

   If the module itself was replaced or if the code persists despite new hardware, the XMC/BCU control unit may need to be reprogrammed with the latest software file and recalibrated via Service ADVISOR.
