John Deere 734.06 – Rear Chassis Module (PTQ): The Forward Clutch Solenoid Amps Are High

Issue description

The control module has detected that the electrical current (amperage) flowing through the forward clutch solenoid circuit exceeds the maximum allowable threshold. This condition is typically caused by a short circuit. Common culprits include a shorted solenoid coil (internal failure), a short to ground in the wiring harness, or a failed driver inside the control module.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the Rear Chassis Module (PTQ) to the transmission valve body for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched harnesses that could be shorting to ground.

  2. Disconnect the forward clutch solenoid and check the pins for corrosion, water intrusion, or melting.

  3. Measure the resistance (Ohms) across the pins of the forward clutch solenoid. A reading near zero indicates an internal short.

  4. With the solenoid disconnected, turn the key ON and use a multimeter to check for a short to ground on the power supply wire.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, lower all implements, and turn off the engine. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the forward clutch solenoid on the transmission control valve block (refer to your specific model's service manual for the exact port location).

  3. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the valve block with brake cleaner or a degreaser. It is critical that no dirt or debris enters the transmission hydraulic system during removal.

  4. Drain/Catch Fluid

    Place a clean drain pan under the valve block, as some transmission fluid will escape when the valve is removed.

  5. Remove the Solenoid

    Disconnect the METRI-PACK electrical connector. Remove the retaining bolts or snap ring securing the solenoid to the valve body, and carefully pull the solenoid straight out.

  6. Install the New Solenoid

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean John Deere Hy-Gard transmission fluid. Carefully insert the new valve into the bore, ensuring it seats fully without pinching the O-rings.

  7. Secure and Reconnect

    Reinstall the retaining bolts/snap ring and torque to OEM specifications. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  8. Final Steps

    Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and check for leaks. Top off the transmission fluid if necessary. Clear the 00734.06 fault code using a diagnostic scanner and perform a test drive to ensure smooth forward engagement.
