John Deere 735.05 – PTD: Proportional Solenoid Valve for Reverse Brake, Current Too Low

Issue description

The control software has detected an open circuit or insufficient current flowing to the reverse brake proportional solenoid valve. When this occurs, the transmission may limit functions, fail to engage reverse, or force the equipment into Park mode.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect Wiring and Connections: Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the reverse brake proportional solenoid valve (often designated as Y36 or Y2 depending on the schematic) for signs of physical damage, loose pins, or corrosion.

  2. Check for Open Circuits: Use a multimeter to test the wiring harness between the PTD control module and the solenoid for continuity. An open circuit in the harness is a common cause of the 'Current Too Low' fault.

  3. Test the Solenoid Valve: Measure the resistance of the reverse brake proportional solenoid coil to ensure it is within OEM specifications. If the coil reads as an open circuit (infinite resistance), the solenoid is internally faulty.

  4. Verify Electrical Supply: Ensure the control unit is outputting the correct voltage/current to the solenoid when reverse is commanded.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Park the machine on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the reverse brake proportional solenoid valve on the transmission valve body.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the solenoid.

  4. Harness Repair (If Applicable)

    If your diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or corroded connector, repair the wiring harness or replace the damaged connector pigtail.

  5. Solenoid Replacement (If Applicable)

    If the solenoid coil tested faulty, unbolt and remove the defective solenoid valve from the transmission.

  6. Installation

    Install the new proportional solenoid valve (and new O-rings if applicable) and torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.

  7. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical connector and reconnect the battery.

  8. Test

    Clear the fault codes from the PTD module using a diagnostic tool. Start the machine, allow the hydraulic oil to warm up, and test-drive the machine in reverse to verify proper engagement and ensure the code does not return.
