John Deere 735.05 – Rear Chassis Module (PTQ): The Reverse Clutch Solenoid Amps Are Low

Issue description

The transmission controller measures the current draw from the reverse clutch solenoid circuit during operation. If the current draw falls below the minimum acceptable limit, it indicates that the circuit is open, shorted to ground, or has lost its power supply. When this code is active, reverse mode is typically disabled by the controller to prevent transmission damage, though forward gears may still function.

Check the cause

  1. Cycle the transmission to neutral, then to forward high or forward low, and back to reverse to check if the code is a momentary glitch.

  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness from the PTQ module to the transmission valve block for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or melted insulation.

  3. Disconnect the reverse clutch solenoid connector and inspect the pins for corrosion, pushed-back terminals, or moisture ingress.

  4. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the reverse clutch solenoid coil. An infinite reading (OL) indicates an open internal coil, meaning the solenoid has failed.

Repair steps

  1. Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

    Ensure the machine is safely parked before beginning repairs.

  2. Relieve any residual hydraulic pressure if required by your specific transmission type (e.g., AutoQuad, DirectDrive, or IVT).

    Follow specific procedures for your transmission type to relieve pressure.

  3. Locate the transmission control valve block and identify the Reverse Clutch Solenoid.

    Find the correct solenoid on the valve block.

  4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the solenoid.

    Remove the harness connection to the solenoid.

  5. If diagnostics point to a failed solenoid (open coil), remove the retaining nut/bolt securing the solenoid valve to the transmission block.

    Unbolt the failed solenoid from the block.

  6. Remove the old solenoid valve and discard the old O-rings.

    Take out the old valve and dispose of the used O-rings.

  7. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean hydraulic/transmission fluid.

    Ensure the new O-rings are properly lubricated before installation.

  8. Install the new solenoid valve into the manifold and tighten it to the OEM torque specification.

    Secure the new solenoid valve in place.

  9. Reconnect the electrical harness.

    Plug the connector back into the new solenoid.

  10. Start the tractor, clear the stored PTQ fault codes, and shift into reverse to verify that the code does not return and the clutch engages properly.

    Test the repair by operating the tractor in reverse.
